Wrong Delivery

Saturday, November 3rd, 2007

I don’t know where this idea came to me from exactly, but it seemed to be something that was worth pondering on for story possibilities when I thought about it.  I was looking at my mail and it just sort of surfaced in my subconsciousness where “what if?” lives.

What would happen if someone made a wrong delivery of something?  Would it be your lead that delivered something to the wrong person or place?  Would it be a major part of the story or a brief sub plot where someone delivered flowers to one of your character’s co-workers by mistake?

What if it was more serious than flowers?  What if a ransom was delivered to the wrong people, not the kidnappers?  Or the kidnappers delivered the kidnap victim to the wrong people after payment was made?  What if a space ship delivered the cargo it carried to the wrong people?  What if a time machine was delivered to the wrong address and instead of going to the lap down the road it went to you hero’s art studio?  Would it be put on display because it was assumed to be some kind of modern art?

Take the wrong delivery idea and run with it, have fun and see what you can come up with.

The Soldier

Friday, November 2nd, 2007

I just had a nephew graduate from Marine Corps boot camp (he looks so handsome in his uniform) so I am going to celebrate by giving a prompt on soldiers.

How could you work a soldier into your writing? An old photograph? Someone thinking about their father/mother/grandparent that was a soldier? Someone thinking about enlisting, or someone that is just getting out of the military?

It does not have to be the Marines, any branch of the military works (shoot, I have Army, Air Force and Marine Corps just in my immediate family), it can even be a unknown military so use your imagination. Is it a pair of boys pretending they are soldiers? Is that alien that survived the crash at Roswell a soldier in an alien army?

That should be enough to get you going, so get going, there’s a lot to write this month!

The Day After

Thursday, November 1st, 2007

Okay, it is now the day after Halloween and I have been busy the last couple of days.  No, nothing exciting like going out to parties or anything, just general around the house busy.  I’m going to be even bussier after today, but I really really want to extend my NaBloPoMo determination from Heir To Magic over to this blog as well and make a commitment to post once a day throughout November here so I form the good habit of visiting this site every day *no matter what* and posting a prompt for you all.

So… what does that mean for today?  The Day After.  Take any event that your character has had to go through and show “the day after” — is it the day after Halloween and they have to clean egg off their house and TP out of the trees? (I hope none of you do, I thankfully don’t have to).  Is it the day after their wedding and they are thinking about their future - is it good or bad?  Is it the day after they got their first car and now they have to explain to their parents what happened to the car?  Is it the day after aliens first made positive undeniable contact with earth and they are seeing about it on the news?

Take anything you can think of and go to the next day - the day the character is dreading the most or looking forward to the most, and show us what is happening to them and why.
