Happy New Year! And a new beginning

Well, here we are in 2008, and so far it is looking like a good year for me and those friends of mine that I have heard from since the New Year has started out. So, here is your prompt for today: A new beginning.
Is there some way that you can work a new beginning into your characters story? It could be the changing of the year, but it might be something else that signifies a new beginning. Maybe they decide to start learning something new, a hobby or a trade. What if they were to suddenly find themselves undergoing a divorce and have to start anew? Would it be a good time (in the plot) for them to lose their job? Maybe they decide to make a new beginning by going on a diet? Do they join a monastery/nunnery?
Whatever new beginning you decide is right for your characters, or even if it is just the beginning of a new day, have some fun and let the muses play with the idea for a while. You can always snip it out later on if it does not fit the story.
