Writing Prompt: Valentine

Wednesday, February 13th, 2008

Tomorrow is Valentine’s Day, so today’s writing prompt is to come up with some reason to work a valentine into your novel.  Perhaps your main character is looking through an old box and finds a valentine?  Do they collect Victorian Valentines?  What would a valentine be line in a futuristic world?  What about magical valentines?  Do mages have a special spell that creates a shower of roses or something for expressing a “be mine” type of message to someone?

Writing Prompt: Bread

Tuesday, February 12th, 2008

Work something about bread into your novel, maybe it could be the character is making a sandwich, or baking bread (which is what I am up to and why that is your prompt ;-)). What kind of bread might your hero be severed by an alien species? Looking for an interesting flaw for your character? What about making them allergic to wheat and unable to eat bread (and a lot of other things - more info on wheat allergies).

Writing Prompt: Tiny Angel

Monday, February 11th, 2008

Today’s writing prompt is inspired by a very sad event. Kiowa (Ki), the tiniest pup of the little from my nephew’s dog, died early this morning despite my efforts to help keep him fed and alive. The tiny fellow was not even as long as from the heel of my hand to the tips of my fingers, less than a third the size of his litter mates, but he managed to hang on for a long time. He just was not getting enough nourishment and I was unable to get to town to buy supplement or the stuff I would need to make my own here. I tried milking the mother for him, but rather it just was not enough or he was not ready for this world…

He has to be one of the tinniest of angels now, so Ki is the inspiration for today’s writing prompt. Work a tiny angel into your story in some manner. Maybe a little metal trinket or a sticker of a tiny angel, a tiny figurine or whatever other manner might strike the muses fancy.

Writing Prompt: Feather

Sunday, February 10th, 2008

Today’s writing prompt is to try and work a feather into your story.  It could be a feather that is found laying on the ground or one tucked into a hat.  If your story has someone that would logically use a bow and arrows then maybe the feather can show up as being used by someone fletching arrows?  Are your characters in space?  Well, either you can have them scratching their heads over how that feather got onto the ship, or it could be a design or the way a nebula looks from their point of view.  Just have fun and keep writing.

Writing Prompt: Puppies

Saturday, February 9th, 2008

Today’s Writing Prompt is puppies.  This prompt brought to you by BB, my nephew’s dog, who started having a litter of puppies at about 9:30 tonight.  Maybe your lead character has a dog having puppies, or their neighbor has one, maybe their kid wants to get a puppy?

What kind of reaction would there be if the mascot on your crew’s space ship had puppies?  Or maybe a dog stowed away on board when they were in port and the mechanics just found a litter of puppies in the cargo hold?

In Dungeons & Dragons there was a type of critter called a Blink Dog that could teleport from place to place.  What might Blink Dog puppies be like?  How about werewolf puppies/babies?
