I woke this morning to having to do taxes, so how about we work that into the writing today?  Is it the old man complaining about the taxes at the checkout line in the store?  Maybe he is grousing about how they were never so high when he was younger?  Is there a tax that your space ship captain has to pay to be allowed to fly through a certain part of space?  Maybe it is a tax used to help find ways to combat the effect that the propulsion system on the ship has on the fabric of space?

In a fantasy setting, is there a tax on buying certain things? Maybe a tax on transporting things into the capitol city?  Do all who use magic have to pay a tax on the components they need for their spells?
