Writing Prompt: Landscape

Once again SXC helps us out with this picture by Streuli Silvan.
This is a picture of Horseshoe Bend, about 5 miles south of Page AZ on highway 89.
It looks a bit more like some kind of crater on Mars or something.
What if the first men on Mars discovered something like this? A crater that had gone unnoticed, but had a deep ring of water around a central pillar of some kind?
What might it be? Some ancient Martian missile silo, the silo filled with water and the cone of the intergalactic missile still sticking up out of the deep hole?
