The Internet

The Internet is a large part of a lot of people’s worlds, which as I am updating my Technorati Profile to claim this blog makes me think that the Internet would be a good prompt for today.
Any story anywhere from the inception of the Internet to the near future can easily have the Internet worked into it, but what about other kinds of stories?
Do you write stories set in the far future? What has the Internet evolved into? Is there now an implant in the head that allows someone to simply think about wanting to look something up and they automatically access the Internet? Can you make a connection like with an instant messenger program simply by thinking about someone for a moment? Is sending an e-mail as easy as thinking about what you want to tell the person, then signaling the implant in your mind to send that message out to the people you want getting it?
What would Internet viruses be like in a world where we all had the Internet installed? Is having the Internet chip installed a voluntary thing, or is it done at birth? What if someone did not have the chip installed? — okay, I have now given you enough to start an entirely new novel, so I’ll hush and move on to another genera LOL
What about fantasy? What would the Internet be like if it was in a fantasy world? Would it be like the PalantÃr of The Lord of the Rings? Would it be a cluster of perfect crystals creating a perfect basin in which water collected during the full of the moon is poured? Is the Internet of the fantasy world the Astral plane?
How about the old west? How would one work the Internet into that setting? Or ancient Rome? How might the Internet work in another dimension?
There are a lot of variations on how the Internet could be interpreted, so enjoy and ponder and think up how it might be used in your world.
