Writing Tip: Write what you want to know

One of the best known bits of writing advice is to write what you know, but I read an even better one once that advised me to write what I want to know. Try picking something that you have always wanted to know about, maybe how to lift a finger print or how to set a trap line, and try writing a short story that features someone that would be using that skill. Maybe write a short story about someone that is taking up ice fishing or fly fishing as a way to help you learn how to do it yourself?
